About Corcog [Corcogemore]

Marking the eastern entrance to the rugged Maumturk Mountains, this steep, conical peak rises sharply above the Maam Valley. Reaching the threshold of a Hewitt, its rocky summit offers a direct perspective of the Twelve Bens to the west and the expansive waters of Lough Corrib stretching out toward the east.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish 'Corcóg', meaning 'beehive', a reference to the hill's distinctive conical profile when viewed from the surrounding lowlands. It is often referred to as Corcogemore (Corcóg Mhór) to distinguish it from its smaller neighbours.
  • Corcog marks the traditional starting point for the Maumturks Challenge, a notoriously demanding ridge walk. Those tackling the peak from the south at Lackavrea face a relentless climb through thick heather and scree that serves as a stern introduction to the range's character.
  • The summit offers a clear sightline of the Maumahoge Pass, a dramatic U-shaped glacial notch that carves through the range, with the neighbouring peak of Mullach Glas standing prominently on the opposite side of the gap.
  • By clearing the 2,000ft mark by just two feet, the peak narrowly secures its status as a Hewitt, making it a primary objective for those bagging the higher Irish summits within the Connemara region.
  • Despite the name suggesting a beehive, the summit is notably lacking in industry; you are significantly more likely to encounter a solitary Connemara sheep than any evidence of a honey-producing colony.
