About Binn Mhor West Top
Perched on the rugged quartzite spine of the Maumturk Mountains, this secondary summit offers a wild, rocky experience. Overlooking the deep trough of the Inagh Valley, it provides an exceptional perspective of the Twelve Bens’ eastern flanks. It is a mandatory, taxing waypoint for those undertaking the full Maumturks ridge traverse.

Did You Know?
- •The name Binn Mhór translates from Irish as 'Great Peak', reflecting the scale of the parent mountain which this western shoulder supports.
- •This top is a key navigation point on the Maumturks Challenge, a notoriously difficult long-distance walk involving over 2,000 metres of ascent across pathless, rocky terrain.
- •The view west from here is spectacular, looking directly across the Inagh Valley to the steep, grey scree slopes of Derryclare and Bencorr in the Twelve Bens.
- •The ground is largely composed of Dalradian quartzite, a hard, ancient rock that gives the Maumturks their characteristically pale, shattered appearance and provides very little grip when wet.
- •Reaching this point offers the briefest illusion that the climbing is finished, right before the main summit of Binn Mhór looms into view immediately to the east.
