Did You Know?
- •Binn Mhór translates from Irish as 'Great Peak.' It serves as the second-highest summit in the Maumturks, standing as a prominent quartzite bulk that dominates the central section of the range.
- •The summit is a primary objective on the Maumturks Ridge Walk, a grueling 25km challenge that involves over 2,300 metres of ascent across the range’s jagged, rocky spine.
- •To the south lies the historic pass of Mám Éan (Pass of the Birds). This site features a small pilgrimage chapel, a holy well, and a statue of St. Patrick, who is said to have blessed the surrounding Connemara landscape from this spot.
- •From the peak, the view west captures the full Glencoaghan Horseshoe of the Twelve Bens, including the sharp profiles of Binn Bhán and Binn Corr, while the vista to the north-west reveals the fjord-like reach of Killary Harbour.
- •The Maumturks are often described as a 'sawtooth' range, a metaphor you will fully appreciate once you realize that Binn Mhór is just one of many sharp teeth designed to test the soles of your boots.
