About Cush [Binnia] [Cois]

Standing as a steep, conical sentinel on the northern edge of the Galty Mountains, this prominent Marilyn offers a sharp initial climb from the Clydagh valley. It provides a dramatic vantage point over the Golden Vale, serving as the gateway to the higher peaks of Galtybeg and Galtymore that lie further south.

Did You Know?

  • The name Cush is derived from the Irish 'Cois', meaning 'at the foot of', reflecting its position as the first significant rise encountered when approaching the high Galty ridge from the north. Locally, it is also known as Glencushnabinnia, incorporating 'Binn', meaning a peak or precipice.
  • The hill is most frequently climbed as the opening act of the 'Glencush Horseshoe', a classic circuit that continues onto the loftier summits of Galtybeg and Galtymore, overlooking the deep corrie of Lough Curra.
  • From the summit, the view north is dominated by the sprawling, fertile pastures of the Golden Vale, with the distant profiles of the Slieve Felim Mountains and the Silvermines visible on clear days.
  • The northern ascent from the Glencush forest access is famously direct; the path strikes a straight line up the heather and grass, gaining nearly 400 metres of elevation in a very short distance.
  • While the name implies the hill is merely at the 'foot' of the range, the unrelenting gradient of the northern face will quickly convince your calves that it deserves more respect than its modest title suggests.
