About Maumtrasna

Dominating the landscape between Lough Mask and Killary Harbour, this sprawling, peat-covered plateau is the high point of the Partry Mountains. Its vast summit offers a true sense of isolation, contrasted by the dramatic sandstone cliffs of the Glenagevla Cirque and expansive views across the rugged heart of Joyce Country.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish Mám Trasna, meaning 'the pass across' or 'the transverse pass,' referring to the ancient route that skirts the mountain's base rather than its sprawling summit.
  • The mountain is historically significant for the 1882 Maumtrasna Murders; the subsequent trial and wrongful execution of Myles Joyce eventually led to a formal presidential pardon over 130 years later.
  • The summit plateau is remarkably vast and featureless, making it one of the most challenging navigational tests in the west of Ireland when the Atlantic mists roll in from Killary.
  • From the northern rim of the plateau at Lugmore, there are striking views down into the deep glacial troughs of Glendavock and across to the Ben Gorm range.
  • It is a mountain that rewards the persistent walker with the unique experience of feeling entirely lost while standing on a summit that is nearly two miles wide.
