About Barnahowna [Mam Cam]
Tucked away at the northern end of the Maumturks, this Tump offers a softer perspective of Connemara’s ruggedness. While less rocky than its southern neighbours, its heathery slopes provide an exceptional vantage point over the dark waters of Killary Harbour and the towering mass of Mweelrea directly across the fjord.

Did You Know?
- •The name likely derives from the Irish 'Bearna Átha hAbhna', meaning the gap of the river ford, referring to its position near the historical transit routes at the northern end of the range.
- •As the northernmost outlier of the Maumturks, the summit offers a unique perspective into 'Joyce Country' and a rare, unobstructed view of the Devil’s Mother and the Partry Mountains to the north.
- •While the central Maumturks are famous for their steep quartzite scree, Barnahowna is characterized by more forgiving, though often heavily saturated, peat and heather terrain.
- •Being a Tump—a hill with a prominence of at least thirty metres—it stands as a distinct, if humble, hump that is often used as the final descent point for those completing the full Maumturks Traverse.
