About Devilsmother Far North Top
This rugged spur at the northern fringe of the Maumturks serves as a dramatic balcony over the head of Killary Harbour. Rising to 602 metres, its terrain of high-altitude peat and scattered rock provides an uncrowded vantage point looking directly across the valley toward the massive bulk of Mweelrea and the Sheeffry Hills.

Did You Know?
- •The name Devilsmother is a dramatic English rendering of the Irish 'Maghaira'; while some local legends lean into the supernatural, it is likely a corruption of 'Machaire', usually referring to a plain or level stretch of ground.
- •This northern shoulder offers a superior view of the 'Great Killary' fjord compared to the main summit, as the eye follows the water from the Aasleagh Falls right out toward the Atlantic.
- •Most hillwalkers encounter this top as the final high point during a descent into Leenane, marking the transition from the high Maumturks into the steep, green pastures of the valley floor.
- •It provides one of the few spots in the range where you can look directly down onto the roof of the village of Leenane, though the descent is significantly more complicated than the vertical distance suggests.
