About Coumfea

This high, peat-covered Hewitt sits on the vast Comeragh plateau, overlooking the dramatic glacial hollow of its namesake coum. While often bypassed for the higher Fauscoum, it offers a true sense of Irish upland isolation and excellent northern views toward the Suir Valley and the distant profile of Slievenamon.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish 'Com Fia', translating as the 'hollow of the deer', a reference to the spectacular glacial corrie that bites into the mountain’s northern slopes.
  • It is a significant peak on the extensive Comeragh plateau, typically climbed as part of a long horseshoe route that includes the range's highest point, Fauscoum.
  • From the summit, the view to the north is dominated by the fertile Suir Valley, while looking east provides a clear perspective of the jagged ridges surrounding the famous Coumshingaun Lough.
  • Navigating the high ground around the summit involves a dedicated masterclass in 'hag-hopping' across a landscape of deep peat hags and saturated bog pools that can make a short distance feel remarkably long.
