About Kilclooney Mountain [Fauscoum]

Rising as the highest point of the Comeragh Mountains, this broad, peat-covered plateau offers a stark contrast to the dramatic glacial scenery nearby. While the summit is relatively flat, the real draw is the staggering drop into the Coumshingaun Corrie just to the east, where dark cliffs plunge toward the lake below.

Did You Know?

  • The name Fauscoum derives from the Irish Fás Chom, meaning the 'growth of the hollow', likely referring to the physical development of the massive glacial corrie that bites into the mountain’s eastern flank.
  • Standing at the summit cairn, you are rewarded with a clear view across the Suir Valley toward the volcanic silhouette of Slievenamon to the north, while the Galtee Mountains are visible further west across the Tipperary plains.
  • The mountain is most famously approached via the rim of Coumshingaun, a horseshoe ridge walk that provides a bird's-eye view of the 'Lough of the Ants' nestled 300 metres below the summit cliffs.
  • On the lower western slopes lies the Kilclooney More portal tomb, a remarkably preserved 5,000-year-old dolmen whose massive capstone appears to float above its uprights, marking the ancient gateway to these uplands.
  • Despite being the highest point in the range, the summit is a featureless expanse of peat hags so vast that, in a thick mist, you might find yourself checking your compass every ten paces just to confirm you haven't accidentally wandered off the mountain.
