Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish 'Cathair Conraoi', meaning the stone fort of Cú Roí. In Irish mythology, Cú Roí mac Dáire was a powerful king and sorcerer of West Munster who was said to spin his fort at night to prevent any entrance from being found.
  • The hill is home to a significant Iron Age promontory fort located on a triangular spur at approximately 625 metres. It is the highest such fortification in Ireland, protected by sheer cliffs on two sides and a massive 100-metre-long drystone wall across its neck.
  • Walkers often combine this summit with its higher neighbour, Baurtregaum, to complete a classic horseshoe of the Slieve Mish range, navigating a high, exposed ridge that divides the waters of Tralee Bay from Dingle Bay.
  • The summit panorama is exceptionally broad; on a clear day, you can look west along the spine of the peninsula towards the Blasket Islands or north across the Shannon Estuary to the distant, pale limestone of the Burren in County Clare.
  • While the Iron Age walls have stood for millennia, the Atlantic weather is far less permanent; the peak is notoriously prone to sudden mists that can turn a legendary fortress into a damp, featureless void in minutes.
