Did You Know?
- •The Irish name An Gunna Mór translates literally as 'The Big Gun.' Rather than having ancient mythological roots, the name is likely a Victorian-era description of the peak's sharp, protruding profile when viewed from the valleys below.
- •The mountain is a critical link on the main Reeks ridge; the section connecting this summit to Cruach Mhór involves navigating a series of jagged rock pinnacles known as the 'Grotto,' which provides some of the highest-quality Grade 1 scrambling in Ireland.
- •At nearly 940 metres, it is one of the ten highest peaks in the country, yet it remains relatively quiet compared to its neighbour Carrauntoohil, as most walkers bypass it via the lower paths in the Hag's Glen.
- •The summit offers a unique vantage point over the 'Bone,' a steep, narrow spur that climbs out of the Hag’s Glen, and provides clear views across the Gap of Dunloe toward the Purple Mountain Group.
- •If you find yourself with plenty of room to move around on the summit, you are likely standing on the wrong hill; the top of The Big Gun is effectively a one-at-a-time affair.
