About Foel Meirch

Sitting on the high, wind-scoured ridge between Carnedd Llewelyn and Carnedd Dafydd, this Nuttall is more than a simple waypoint. It offers a rugged, boulder-strewn character and an impressive perspective over the dark waters of Ffynnon Llugwy, framed by the steep, dramatic slopes of the main Carneddau massif.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Welsh as 'Bare Hill of the Horses'. This refers to the plural 'meirch' (horses), likely noting the historic grazing of the semi-feral Carneddau ponies that still frequent these high plateaus today.
  • While often bypassed by walkers hurrying between the major 3,000ft peaks, the summit provides one of the finest 'side-on' views of the Great Gully and the massive cliffs of Craig yr Ysfa.
  • It is a mandatory stop for 'Nuttall baggers'—hillwalkers attempting to summit every peak in England and Wales over 2,000 feet with a minimum drop of 15 metres on all sides.
  • Its position on the main ridge makes it an excellent place to observe the weather rolling in from the Atlantic, or to discover exactly how waterproof your 'waterproof' trousers really are.
