• •The name translates from Welsh as 'Head of the White Slope'. 'Ole' is a local dialect variant of 'goleu', which can refer to light or a hillside, while 'wen' (white) likely describes the light-coloured quartz and scree that distinguish its steep southern flanks.
• •While its southern face appears as an impenetrable wall of rock from the A5 road, the mountain is most commonly tackled via the steep, zig-zagging path from Ogwen Cottage or the slightly broader east ridge. Both routes gain nearly 700 metres of elevation in a very short horizontal distance.
• •The summit serves as the dramatic southern gateway to the Carneddau. Once the initial climb is conquered, the terrain levels out into a vast, high-altitude plateau that stretches north toward Carnedd Dafydd, offering some of the most remote and expansive walking in Wales.
