About Pen yr Ole Wen

Guarding the southern entrance to the Carneddau, this formidable Hewitt offers a punishing but rewarding scramble from the Ogwen Valley. Its craggy face dominates the skyline above Llyn Ogwen, providing a gateway to the high plateau. Reaching the summit earns a spectacular perspective over the Glyderau and the sharp ridge of Tryfan.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Welsh as 'Head of the White Slope'. 'Ole' is a local dialect variant of 'goleu', which can refer to light or a hillside, while 'wen' (white) likely describes the light-coloured quartz and scree that distinguish its steep southern flanks.
  • While its southern face appears as an impenetrable wall of rock from the A5 road, the mountain is most commonly tackled via the steep, zig-zagging path from Ogwen Cottage or the slightly broader east ridge. Both routes gain nearly 700 metres of elevation in a very short horizontal distance.
  • The summit serves as the dramatic southern gateway to the Carneddau. Once the initial climb is conquered, the terrain levels out into a vast, high-altitude plateau that stretches north toward Carnedd Dafydd, offering some of the most remote and expansive walking in Wales.
  • Views from the summit cairn are exceptionally well-earned, providing a clear sightline down the length of the glacial Nant Ffrancon valley toward the Menai Strait. To the south, the fractured, grey battlements of the Glyderau are laid out in an impressive panoramic.
  • The direct ascent from the foot of the Ogwen Valley is a masterclass in psychological warfare; it is a relentless, vertical grind that ensures any warmth you feel at the summit is less about the weather and more about the internal combustion required to get there.
