About this Route
This GPX climbs Whernside from Ribblehead by the railway-side approach and the eastern path. It is an 8.6 km out-and-back with 477 m of ascent, reaching the 736 m summit before returning the same way. It is shorter than the usual circuit through Bruntscar, but the climb is still a proper hill walk and the upper ridge is very exposed.
Set off from the parking near Ribblehead and follow the signed track towards the viaduct. Take the Whernside path beside the Settle–Carlisle railway, climbing the embankment and continuing past Blea Moor Sidings, the signal box and the old railway cottage. Cross Little Dale Beck, then use the authorised crossing by Force Gill Aqueduct and follow the stone steps towards Dentdale. Higher up, take the signed Whernside fork and climb the repaired path across the east flank. At the ridge wall, turn south for the summit shelter and trig point. Return to Ribblehead by exactly the same path; this GPX does not use the steep southern descent to Bruntscar.
The route is busy during Three Peaks events but can feel very different in poor weather. Cloud makes the long ridge surprisingly confusing, while wind can be fierce around the summit wall. Stay on the surfaced path, carry a map and compass as well as the GPX, and take care wherever the route meets railway infrastructure. Do not cross the tracks anywhere except the signed authorised crossing. Roadside parking also fills early, so leave gateways and sightlines clear.
The viaduct and railway lead you into the walk; the long, open ridge makes Whernside feel properly high.

Route Waypoints
Start from the recognised roadside parking near the B6255 and Ribblehead Viaduct. Park fully off the road without blocking gates or passing places.
Follow signs towards the viaduct. Where the broad track bends left, take the narrower signed Whernside path on the right and climb the stone steps.
Continue beside the railway, ignoring routes through the tunnels towards Winterscales. Stay on the bridleway signed for the Three Peaks and Dent.
Pass Blea Moor signal box and the old cottage, then cross Little Dale Beck on the footbridge and continue north.
Use only the authorised signed crossing by the aqueduct. Never take a shortcut across the live railway.
Climb the stone steps and eastern slope. At the route split, take the left fork signed for the Yorkshire Three Peaks and Whernside.
Reach the ridge wall, turn south and follow the main path to the shelter and trig point at 736 m. Keep back from the western drop in cloud or wind.
Retrace the east-flank path past Force Gill and Blea Moor Sidings. Do not follow the main Three Peaks descent towards Bruntscar.
Essential Tips
The Settle–Carlisle line is live. Cross only at the signed point on this GPX, look and listen, and never walk along the track.
Most Three Peaks walkers descend south towards Bruntscar. This guide returns down the eastern path, so reverse your route from the summit.
Whernside's long ridge catches the weather. Carry warm and waterproof layers and stay away from the western edge in poor visibility.
Roadside spaces fill quickly. Keep the carriageway, gateways and passing places clear, and be prepared to choose another walk if parking is unsafe.
