Did You Know?

  • The name originates from its proximity to the Maiden Way, a Roman road that passes nearby as it heads north from Kirkby Thore. Despite its name, there is no evidence of a Roman fort on the fell itself; it served primarily as a significant navigational marker for those travelling the valley floor.
  • Access is severely restricted as the hill sits within the Warcop Training Area. It can only be legally climbed on designated Ministry of Defence 'Open Days'—typically occurring on specific bank holidays and weekends—when live-firing exercises are suspended.
  • Geologically, the fell is part of the Cross Fell Inlier, where the Pennine Fault has exposed older rocks than the surrounding limestone. The 'Roman Fell Conglomerate' found here is a distinctive, reddish rock formed from ancient desert flash floods.
  • From the summit, the view west across the Vale of Eden is exceptional, offering a clear sightline to the eastern fells of the Lake District, including the distinctive profiles of Blencathra and the Helvellyn range.
  • It is perhaps the only hill in the North Pennines where your itinerary is dictated less by the weather forecast and more by the schedule of the British Army’s heavy artillery.
