About High Greygrits

Rising above the Mallerstang valley near Kirkby Stephen, this gritstone-capped height offers a quieter alternative to its more famous neighbours. It is a classic Pennine moorland hill, characterized by peat hags and sweeping grasses, where a deep sense of isolation is the primary reward for those seeking its Tump summit.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a literal description of the local geology, referring to the outcroppings of Millstone Grit that puncture the peat on this section of the Pennine moors.
  • Though often overlooked in favour of the nearby Wild Boar Fell, the summit provides an excellent vantage point over the upper Eden Valley and the steep eastern escarpment of the Howgill Fells.
  • It sits as the higher partner to Low Greygrits, which lies just to the north-west; together they form a high, desolate plateau that separates the Mallerstang valley from the remote Uldale.
  • In keeping with its name, the hill offers a masterclass in various shades of Cumbrian grey, from the weathered gritstone boulders to the frequent low-hanging mist.
