Did You Know?

  • The name stems from the Old Norse 'hryggr', meaning a ridge or long hill, suggesting that even to early settlers, this slightly elevated ground stood out from the surrounding mire.
  • Looking north from the top, walkers can see the deep incision of the South Tyne Valley as it winds towards Haltwhistle, set against the lower rolling hills of the Border country.
  • As a Tump, the hill is defined by having a prominence of at least 30 metres, a modest distinction that nonetheless marks it as a discrete high point amidst the rolling moorland.
  • Labeling any part of this moorland as 'Dry' is an exercise in North Pennine optimism; in reality, the approach usually involves a fair amount of bog-hopping and heather-plunging.
