Did You Know?

  • The name derives from Scottish Gaelic 'stob', meaning a pointed peak or stake, and 'liath', meaning grey – describing a grey-coloured rocky summit common to many Highland hills.
  • This hill lies within Creag Meagaidh National Nature Reserve, a 3,940-hectare protected area established in 1986 where controlled grazing has allowed spectacular regrowth of native woodland across formerly bare hillsides.
  • The reserve surrounding this summit is designated as a Special Protection Area, particularly important for breeding dotterel which nest on the high plateau areas of the Creag Meagaidh massif.
  • While walkers flock to the dramatic ice-climbing crags of neighbouring Creag Meagaidh and Stob Poite Coire Ardair, this modest outlier offers quieter ground within the same magnificent reserve.
