About Sgaoth Iosal

Rising to 531 metres on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, this remote Dodd occupies wild, exposed moorland terrain typical of the island's interior. The approach crosses trackless peat and heather, demanding careful navigation. Summit views extend across the island's lochan-studded landscape toward the Atlantic coast and neighbouring Lewis hills.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from Scottish Gaelic, with 'sgaoth' meaning 'shadow' or 'shade' and 'iosal' meaning 'low', likely describing how this hill sits in the shadow of higher ground or casts shade across the surrounding moorland.
  • The grid reference NB154043 places this hill in one of the most remote stretches of Lewis, far from any public roads and requiring a substantial approach across trackless terrain that has changed little since the last ice age.
  • As a Dodd, this hill qualifies as one of Scotland's hills between 500 and 599 metres with sufficient prominence, a classification that captures many of the Outer Hebrides' modest but challenging summits where navigation often proves harder than the altitude suggests.
