About Triuirebheinn

Situated on the rugged eastern coast of South Uist, this Hebridean Marilyn offers a wild, pathless ascent through classic island moorland. Though modest in height, its summit provides an exceptional perspective over the labyrinthine lochans of the Loch Druidibeal area and across the Minch to the jagged mountains of Skye.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Triùir-bheinn, meaning 'Hill of the Three,' which likely refers to the trio of distinct bumps that form its summit ridge.
  • Looking north from the summit, the hill offers an excellent profile view of its higher neighbours, Hecla and Beinn Mhòr, which dominate the skyline of the island’s central mountain chain.
  • The hill is composed of Lewisian gneiss, some of the oldest rock in the world, resulting in a characteristically rough, craggy terrain that remains stubbornly wet even in fair weather.
  • Navigating the lower slopes requires a keen eye for solid ground; in this part of the Hebrides, the distance to the summit is measured less in horizontal miles and more in the depth of the intervening peat hags.
