About Stob Creagach

Sitting prominently on the eastern shoulder of Beinn Dubhchraig, this rocky summit offers a rugged alternative to the main ridge path. It overlooks the deep trough of Glen Cononish, providing a grandstand view of Ben Lui’s dramatic central gully and the industrial history of the Cononish gold mine far below.

Did You Know?

  • The name Stob Creagach translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Craggy Peak,' an apt description for its shattered summit ridge which stands in stark contrast to the peat-heavy, rounded slopes found lower down near the Allt Gleann an Lòchain.
  • The hill is most frequently visited as a detour from the ascent of its higher neighbour, Beinn Dubhchraig, requiring a traverse across the high, often waterlogged col of the Lairig Arnan.
  • From the summit cairn, the view west is dominated by the massive eastern face of Ben Lui, offering a clear sightline into the spectacular glacial amphitheatre of Coire Gaothaich.
  • To the north, the steep slopes drop away into Glen Cononish, where Scotland's only commercial gold mine is located, processing ore extracted from the quartz veins of the surrounding Tyndrum hills.
  • As a Tump that falls just twenty-eight feet short of the magic 3,000-foot mark, the peak remains remarkably quiet, usually ignored by those focused on the neighbouring higher summits.
