Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Stob Coire nam Beith', meaning 'Peak of the Corrie of the Birches.' While the high slopes are now a world of scree and rock, the name recalls a time when birch woodland extended much further up the sheltered lower glens.
  • The north-western face is a celebrated playground for mountaineers, featuring the Diamond Buttress and Church Door Buttress. These provide some of the most challenging and atmospheric traditional climbing routes in the Glencoe area.
  • The summit provides an unparalleled perspective of Loch Achtriochtan on the valley floor, framed perfectly by the steep walls of the glen, with the serrated skyline of the Aonach Eagach ridge dominating the northern horizon.
  • While often visited as part of the wider Bidean nam Bian circuit, it can be climbed directly from the A82. This route involves a relentless ascent of over 900 metres through the spectacular, boulder-strewn landscape of the upper corrie.
  • The descent via the shifting scree slopes into the corrie is a fine way to test both the structural integrity of your knees and the depth of your vocabulary.
