About Stob Coire Dubh

Tucked away in the high, rolling interior of the Monadhliath, this Munro Top presents a broad, heathery profile typical of the range. Its ascent offers a quiet alternative to the busier Grampian peaks, leading to a sprawling summit plateau that feels remarkably remote, overlooking the shadowed scoops of the surrounding corries.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Stob Coire Dubh', translating as the Peak of the Black Corrie. While 'Stob' often implies a sharp point, here it refers to the high ground above the dark, north-facing hollows that bite into the mountain’s eastern flank.
  • It is most commonly climbed as part of a high-level circuit from the south, usually paired with its parent Munro, A' Chailleach. The terrain between the two is a classic example of the Monadhliath's 'Mhor' (great) moorland—vast, peat-scarred, and home to significant populations of red deer and mountain hares.
  • Looking east from the summit, the vast plateau of the Cairngorms fills the horizon beyond the Spey Valley, while to the west, the long trench of the Great Glen sits hidden beneath the distant, rugged peaks of the Kintail and Affric hills.
  • At 915.6 metres, the peak only just clears the 3,000ft threshold required for Munro Top status. It is one of the more understated '3000ers' in the Grampians, often overlooked by those who stick strictly to the primary Munro summits.
  • Navigation on this plateau can be notoriously difficult in the frequent Highland mists; with few distinguishing features and an abundance of peat hags, the hill has a habit of making walkers work surprisingly hard for their summit.
