About Sgurr Thionail

Situated in the rugged backcountry between Loch Mullardoch and Glen Elchaig, this remote ridge-top offers a profound sense of isolation. At over 900 metres, its grassy slopes provide a quiet, high-altitude vantage point over the neighbouring peaks of Mullach na Dheiragain and the distant, jagged skyline of the Five Sisters of Kintail.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Sgùrr Thionail', which translates as the 'Peak of the Gathering'. This likely refers to the historical practice of 'the gathering'—bringing sheep or cattle down from the high summer pastures in the surrounding corries.
  • Due to its remote location, the hill is usually accessed via a long approach from Iron Lodge at the head of Glen Elchaig or as an extension to a demanding circuit of the mountains surrounding Loch Mullardoch.
  • The summit offers a specific, clear perspective of the remote northern ridges of Mullach na Dheiragain and looks directly down the length of Gleann Canaich towards the massive bulk of Sgùrr na Lapaich on the eastern horizon.
  • At 905.5 metres, it falls less than nine metres short of the 914.4-metre threshold required for Munro status, ensuring it remains a tranquil spot even when the neighbouring principal peaks are busy.
