About Sgurr na Lapaich

Rising as a sharp, stony pyramid above the southern shores of Loch Mullardoch, this impressive peak is often mistaken for a standalone Munro. Despite its status as a Top of Mam Sodhail, it offers one of the finest ridge walks in the North West Highlands, boasting a rugged, alpine character and a commanding presence.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, where Sgùrr refers to a sharp, rocky peak. Lapaich is often translated as 'boggy,' likely referring to the peat hags of the lower slopes, though some scholars suggest it relates to 'frozen' or 'benumbed' due to its exposed, high-altitude position.
  • In Sir Hugh Munro's original 1891 tables, this peak was classified as a separate mountain. It was only demoted to a Munro Top in later revisions because the connecting ridge to Mam Sodhail does not drop sufficiently, despite Sgurr na Lapaich having a far more dramatic profile than many primary Munros.
  • Standing at the summit, walkers are rewarded with a direct view down the full twelve-mile length of Loch Mullardoch to the east, while the northern horizon is dominated by the long, high ridge of An Riabhachan.
  • The hill is a key milestone on the 'Mullardoch Round,' an epic and remote circuit of the peaks surrounding the loch, often requiring a boat across the water or a multi-day wild camp to complete.
  • It remains a source of dry amusement among hikers that this spectacular, airy peak is officially just a 'Top,' while several nearby rounded, featureless mounds are granted full Munro status.
