About An Leth-chreag

Rising above the remote, high-altitude plateaux of the Monadhliath, this Munro Top often feels like the true climax of the range despite its subsidiary status. The terrain is typically peat-heavy and wild, offering expansive, rolling views across the Great Glen toward the rugged peaks of Kintail and the distant Ben Nevis massif.

Did You Know?

  • The name An Leth-chreag translates from Gaelic as 'the half-crag', likely referring to the abrupt steepening of its northern slopes above the Allt Ban, which contrasts with the gentle, rolling plateau found to the south.
  • Despite being classified as a Munro Top of its neighbour, Càrn Dearg, An Leth-chreag is actually the higher of the two summits by two metres, standing at 1,051 metres.
  • The summit provides an exceptional vantage point for looking across the Great Glen towards the pointed peaks of the South Shiel Forest and the massive, sprawling bulk of the Grey Corries.
  • Navigation on this sprawling plateau is notoriously difficult in poor visibility; the lack of defining features means that a small error can quickly result in a very long, unplanned journey through some of the region's deepest peat hags.
