Did You Know?

  • The name Sgùrr an Fhuarail translates from Scottish Gaelic as the 'Peak of the Chilly Place.' This likely refers to the exposed nature of the ridge as it catches the prevailing winds funnelling through the high pass of Glen Shiel.
  • While classified as a Tump, most walkers cross this top as the first major milestone during the steep ascent of the Munro A’ Chràlaig, which towers further north along the same narrow ridge.
  • The summit provides an excellent profile view of the South Glen Shiel Ridge directly across the valley, particularly the zig-zagging stalker's paths on Creag a' Mhaim and the long stretch of Loch Cluanie to the east.
  • It serves primarily as a 'false summit' for the weary; reaching it provides a fine view of the road, but a demoralising look at how much climbing is still required to reach the main mountain.
