About Am Bathach

Rising steeply from the head of Glen Shiel, this sharp-crested Corbett offers a high-quality ridge walk on relatively firm turf. While often bypassed for the nearby Munros, its narrow summit provides an exceptional vantage point for studying the complex south-east ridges of the massive Càrn Eige and Mam Sodhail.

Geology
The ridge of Am Bathach is built from the Tarvie Psammite Formation, a sturdy mix of hardened sandstone and fine, clay-rich rocks.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Am Bathach', meaning 'The Byre' or 'The Cow-shed', likely referring to the hill’s long, roof-like profile when viewed from the south.
  • The summit offers a spectacular, unobstructed view across the deep trench of Glen Shiel toward the Seven Sisters of Kintail and the sprawling South Shiel Ridge.
  • Due to its proximity to the A87, it is frequently treated as a short, steep afternoon climb, though it is often combined with the Munro Mullach Fraoch-choire to the north via the Bealach a' Choinich.
  • While its name translates to a humble cow shed, the steep, relentless grass slopes of the southern ascent are more likely to leave a walker breathing like a winded bull.
  • Despite being overshadowed by the 1,000-metre giants of the Affric forest, its position as a Marilyn ensures it remains a prominent landmark for those travelling the road to Skye.
