About Mullach Coire nan Nead

Sitting as a high, stony shoulder on the eastern ridge of Sgùrr Choinnich Mòr, this Munro Top offers a classic Grey Corries experience. Its pale quartzite slopes overlook the remote Lairig Leacach, providing a wild perspective of the neighbouring Easains and the deep, rugged trough of the glen far below.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for 'Summit of the Corrie of the Nests'. It refers to the steep, craggy bowls beneath the ridge which have historically provided nesting sites for birds of prey, well-sheltered from the prevailing winds.
  • Most walkers visit this summit as the final high point of a Grey Corries traverse. It marks the transition from the high-level quartzite ridge to the long, steep descent towards the Lairig Leacach bothy.
  • The summit offers an exceptional profile view of the neighbouring Munro, Sgùrr Choinnich Mòr, showcasing the sheer scale of its dramatic northern cliffs and the narrowness of the connecting ridge.
  • The terrain is dominated by shattered quartzite scree, a geological feature that gives the entire range its distinctive 'grey' appearance, often shimmering with a ghostly silver light during wet weather.
  • It is a peak that rewards the patient; while many rush past to reach the valley before dusk, the view east toward the Loch Treig hills provides a sense of isolation rarely found closer to Fort William.
