About Mulla bho Thuath [Mulla-Fo-Thuath]

Forming a rugged, high-level northern spur of the Clisham horseshoe, this Harris peak offers some of the most dramatic ridgeline walking in the Outer Hebrides. The terrain is characteristically rocky and steep, connecting via a narrow col to its southern neighbour and offering a sharp, stony vantage point above Glen Scaladale.

Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Scottish Gaelic, the name translates as the ‘Northern Summit’, distinguishing it from its neighbour, Mulla bho Dheas, which sits directly across the high pass to the south.
  • It is most commonly visited as the northern cornerstone of the Clisham Horseshoe, a demanding high-level circuit that requires negotiating steep, bouldery slopes and narrow ridges.
  • From the summit, the view drops sharply into the deep trough of Glen Scaladale to the east, while the jagged silhouette of the Cuillin on Skye is often visible across the Minch in settled conditions.
  • While officially classified as a Tump, the relentless gradient and the tendency for Harris granite to turn into a vertical skating rink in the rain make it feel considerably more significant than the label suggests.
