About Mulla bho Dheas [Mulla-Fo-Dheas]

Rising as a vital part of the Clisham horseshoe on Harris, this rugged peak offers a quintessential Hebridean experience. The terrain is dominated by ancient, weathered Lewisian gneiss and broken rock. It feels significantly more remote than its height suggests, overlooking the wild, uninhabited interiors of the North Harris Forest.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Scottish Gaelic, with 'Mulla' being a derivative of 'Mullach' (summit) and 'Dheas' meaning south. It serves as the southern anchor on the high ridge that connects the parent peak of Clisham to Mullach an Langa.
  • It is a key milestone on the Clisham Horseshoe, widely considered the finest mountain traverse in the Outer Hebrides. The route links several peaks in a high-level circuit that maintains a sense of great scale and isolation.
  • The summit provides an exceptional vantage point over the deep glacial trough of Glen Ulladale. From here, you can see the massive overhanging face of Sròn Ulladale, which is one of the most significant and intimidating cliffs in the British Isles.
  • The mountain is composed of Lewisian gneiss, which is among the oldest rock in the world at approximately three billion years. Its durability has created the jagged, scoured topography that defines the North Harris skyline.
  • While the ridge itself is firm, the standard approach from the A859 road is notorious for its boggy terrain, where the depth of the mud often seems to vary in direct proportion to how expensive your walking boots were.
