Did You Know?

  • The name Moruisg is derived from the Gaelic 'Mór-uisg', meaning 'big water', a fitting description for a mountain notorious for the numerous burns and boggy ground that drain its southern slopes into the River Carron.
  • Reaching this top involves traversing the high, stony plateau of Moruisg, a landscape of moss and wind-scoured grit that contrasts sharply with the steep, wet grass found on the initial climb from Glen Carron.
  • The summit provides an excellent vantage point for looking east towards the remote hills of the Monar Forest and north-west to the distinctive triple peaks of Liathach in Torridon.
  • Despite its proximity to a popular Munro, this top remains largely unvisited by those following the standard line of ascent, making it a peaceful spot even on busy walking days.
  • The Gaelic name’s reference to 'big water' is rarely seen as a poetic tribute to the local lochans; it is more often viewed as a literal warning by walkers currently wringing out their socks.
