About Meall nam Maigheach

Sitting quietly above the high pass between Glen Lyon and Loch Tay, this rounded, heathery summit is often overlooked for the neighbouring Ben Lawers range. It offers an easy, short ascent from the Lairig Ghallabhaich, providing a grandstand view across to the massive south faces of Meall nan Tarmachan and Beinn Ghlas.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Gaelic as "Hill of the Hares," a fitting title for a landscape dominated by high-altitude heath where mountain hares are frequently spotted changing into their white winter coats.
  • Because the road through the Lairig Ghallabhaich reaches nearly 550 metres, the ascent involves less than 200 metres of climbing, making it one of the most straightforward summits to reach in the Grampians.
  • The summit serves as an excellent vantage point for studying the complex glacial architecture of the Lawers group, offering a perspective on the cliffs of Creag na Caillich that is often missed from the main ridge walk.
  • It is an ideal spot for those who enjoy the sensation of being high in the mountains without the knee-crunching descent usually required to get back to the car.
