About Meall Coire Lochain

Occupying a prominent position on the northern shoulder of Sgùrr a' Mhàim, this high Mamore summit offers a dramatic perspective over Glen Nevis. The terrain is typical of the range: steep, grassy slopes giving way to quartzite scree, with a sharp drop into the deep trough of the glen below.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, translating as 'hill of the corrie of the little loch', referring to the small body of water nestled in the high hanging valley to its east.
  • It forms a vital part of the northern approach to Sgùrr a' Mhàim, often serving as the first or last significant climb for those undertaking the classic Ring of Steall circuit.
  • The summit provides an unparalleled perspective of the massive Carn Mòr Dearg Arête and the towering North Face of Ben Nevis directly across the depths of Glen Nevis.
  • Looking down the eastern slopes, walkers can see the white thread of An Steall Bàn, the 120-metre waterfall that dominates the head of the glen.
  • Despite its impressive height of 905 metres, it misses out on Munro status by less than nine metres, making it one of the highest points in the UK that fails to make the 3,000ft cut-off.
