About Meall Dubh

Rising above the eastern shores of Loch Lochy near Invergloy, this substantial Hump offers a quieter alternative to the busier Great Glen peaks. Its broad, heathery slopes lead to a summit with clear sightlines across to the distinctive pointed profile of Ben Tee and the distant, rugged ridges of the Grey Corries.

Did You Know?

  • The name Meall Dubh translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Black Rounded Hill,' a description that reflects its bulky, heathery profile when viewed from the Great Glen below.
  • The summit serves as an excellent vantage point for surveying the Great Glen Fault, the massive geological rift that physically divides the Northwest Highlands from the Grampian Mountains.
  • Walkers often approach the hill from the forest tracks at Clunes or Invergloy, passing through commercial forestry before emerging onto the open, peat-heavy moorland that defines the upper slopes.
  • Despite being named 'Black Hill,' the most prominent colour you are likely to encounter is the deep, unforgiving brown of the extensive peat hags that guard the summit plateau.
