About Meall Breac

Tucked away in the eastern Grampians near Glenshee, this rounded, heathery summit offers a quiet alternative to the busy Munros nearby. The terrain is typical of the Mounth: high, rolling plateaus and peat hags. It provides a superb perspective of the deep trough of Gleann Beag and the scree-covered slopes of An Socach.

Geology
Meall Breac is built from ancient layers of mudstone, sandstone, and volcanic rock. These were compressed and transformed into the rugged, layered foundation beneath your boots.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic for 'speckled hill', referring to the mottled appearance of the slopes where heather and grass are broken up by patches of rock and scree.
  • Situated just west of the Cairnwell Pass, the summit offers an excellent perspective of the 'Glenshee Three'—The Cairnwell, Càrn Aosda, and Càrn a' Ghèoidh—across the deep valley.
  • The approach from the south via Glen Lochsie involves following an old stalking path, providing a gentler ascent than the steep, direct pulls found on the neighbouring Munro, An Socach.
  • While the neighbouring hills are dominated by the infrastructure of the Glenshee Ski Centre, the most complex piece of engineering you are likely to encounter on this hill is a particularly stubborn peat hag.
