Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Scottish Gaelic Garbh Bheinn, the name translates as 'Rough Hill'. It is an apt description for this Ardgour peak, where the mountain is comprised of ancient, abrasive gneiss and granite that provides exceptional grip for those navigating its craggy flanks.
  • The most celebrated route to the summit is the South East Ridge, often called the Great Ridge. It is a classic of the West Highlands, offering sustained scrambling on clean, solid rock with an atmosphere that belies its relatively modest height.
  • From the 857m summit, the view across the Corran Narrows is unparalleled. You can see the full height of Ben Nevis from sea level to peak, as well as the long chain of the Mamores and the distant, jagged profile of the Sgùrr of Eigg to the west.
  • Accessing the hill usually involves a trip on the Corran Ferry. This short crossing over Loch Linnhe acts as a gateway, leaving the bustling traffic of the A82 behind for the quieter, more remote atmosphere of the Ardgour peninsula.
  • While the name translates simply as 'Rough Hill', the abrasive quality of the rock ensures that visitors usually leave with significantly less skin on their knuckles than they arrived with.
