Cul na Creige

Tucked away near Killin, Cul na Creige is the mountain equivalent of a middle child—sturdy, dependable, and often overlooked. At 617 meters, this Graham Top provides a peaceful sanctuary from the Munro-bagging throngs, provided you’re prepared for a spirited wrestling match with some very ambitious Scottish heather.

• •The Gaelic name translates as 'back of the crag,' a title that suggests the mountain was named by someone who was currently standing on a much more interesting hill nearby.
• •Geologically, it sits within the Dalradian Supergroup, meaning the metamorphic rocks underfoot have been through more pressure and folding than a last-minute origami project.
• •Standing at 617.1 meters, it technically qualifies as a Graham Top, which is the mountaineering equivalent of being told you have a 'great personality' instead of being a Munro.
• •While gazing toward Loch Tay, remember there are over 31,460 freshwater lochs in Scotland; Cul na Creige's own slopes contribute to this tally with several nameless lochans designed specifically to soak your socks.
• •The lower slopes feature a collection of peat hags that are essentially Nature’s way of testing your commitment to the hobby by attempting to swallow your legs whole.
