About Creag Feusag

Rising steeply above the remote northern shores of Loch Monar, this rugged Tump offers a quieter perspective than the neighbouring Strathfarrar Munros. The ascent over heathery slopes reveals the immense scale of the Monar Dam and the jagged skyline of the Mullardoch hills across the deep waters to the south.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Creag Fheusaig', meaning 'Bearded Crag'. This likely refers to the appearance of long lichens or 'Old Man’s Beard' on its rocky outcrops, or perhaps the way winter snow clings to its craggy, north-facing gullies.
  • It provides a superior vantage point for surveying the remote Loch Monar reservoir; from the summit, you can trace the long ridge lines of Lurg Mhòr and Sgùrr Choinnich rising out of the wilderness to the west.
  • The hill overlooks an area significantly transformed in the 1960s by the Affric-Beauly hydroelectric scheme, which saw the water level of Loch Monar raised by over 20 metres, drowning the old shielings at the hill's southern base.
  • Given the strictly timed access gate in Glen Strathfarrar, reaching this summit often feels less like a mountain excursion and more like a tactical race against the estate ranger’s closing schedule.
