About Cnoc an Tubait

Rising above the coastal village of Achiltibuie in the North West Highlands, this modest heathery summit offers a grandstand view of the Summer Isles. While often overlooked for its more dramatic neighbor, Ben Mor Coigach, it provides an accessible vantage point for surveying the jagged coastline and the distant peaks of An Teallach.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for 'Hill of the Tub' or 'Hill of the Vat', which likely refers to a specific hollow or dip in the landscape near the summit area.
  • Situated on the Coigach peninsula, the summit provides one of the finest perspectives of the Summer Isles archipelago, with Tanera Mòr, Tanera Beag, and Horse Island clearly visible across the water.
  • To the south, the view is dominated by the formidable jagged skyline of An Teallach and the remote mountains of the Fisherfield Forest across the mouth of Loch Broom.
  • At 423 metres, it is classified as a Hump and a Tump, serving as a prominent local landmark for the crofting communities scattered along the Coigach coastline.
  • The ascent is a classic example of West Highland rough going; whatever the path lacks in distance, it makes up for with thick heather and the occasional hidden boggy patch.
