Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Scottish Gaelic 'Càrn a' Chuilinn', meaning 'Cairn of the Holly'. While the prickly evergreen is rare at this elevation today, the name likely refers to the flora of the lower glens or a historical period with a higher treeline.
  • This summit serves as the eastern shoulder to the higher parent peak, Carn a' Chuilinn. The high ground connecting the two is characteristic of the Monadhliath, consisting of broad, featureless plateaus that require sharp navigation in poor visibility.
  • Looking south from the top, you can overlook the route of the Corrieyairack Pass, the 18th-century military road built by General Wade to connect Fort Augustus with Dalwhinnie.
  • Navigating this terrain in the mist often involves more time studying a compass than the scenery, as one peat hag looks remarkably like the next.
