Ben Skriaig

Tucked away in the Sleat peninsula on the Isle of Skye, this modest summit offers a rugged character typical of the 'Garden of Skye'. Though only 309 metres high, the climb through rough heather is rewarded with expansive views across the Sound of Sleat toward the jagged peaks of Knoydart.

• •The name is likely derived from the Gaelic 'Sgritheag', referring to a place of shingle or scree, sharing its roots with the Old Norse 'skriða' which describes a landslide or stony slope.
• •Its position on the Sleat peninsula makes it an exceptional vantage point for looking east across the water to the massive bulk of Ladhar Bheinn and the remote wilderness of Knoydart.
• •Walkers often combine a visit to this hill with an exploration of the nearby coast, where the ruins of 13th-century Caisteal Chamuis (Knock Castle) sit on a rocky headland overlooking the Sound.
• •At 309 metres, it technically qualifies as a Hump (a hill with a hundred-metre prominence), proving that in the Highlands, even a modest bump can demand a surprising amount of respect from your calf muscles.
