About Beinn Eunaich East Top

Situated on the long eastern shoulder of its Munro parent, this subsidiary top offers a quieter perspective of the rugged Glen Strae. The terrain is primarily steep grass and heather, providing a grandstand view across to the Ben Cruachan massif and the distinctive, snowy North Face of Beinn Laoigh in the east.

Did You Know?

  • The name Beinn Eunaich translates from Scottish Gaelic as the 'Hill of the Birds' or 'Hill of Fowling,' suggesting its historical importance as a site for hunting moorland game.
  • While often bypassed by those focused solely on the main summit, this top sits on the long ridge that descends towards the ruins of 'Castles' in Glen Strae, once a stronghold of the MacGregors.
  • The summit provides an excellent profile view of the 'Castles'—the dark, rocky buttresses on the eastern face of the neighbouring Beinn a' Chochuill across the glen.
  • From this vantage point, walkers can look directly down the length of Loch Awe, identifying the tiny islands of Inishail and Fraoch Eilean nestled in the water far below.
  • It is a useful spot for the hiker who finds the main summit of Beinn Eunaich a little too busy and prefers to eat their sandwiches while contemplating the sheer drop into the quiet valley of the River Strae.
