About Beinn Bhac-ghlais

Rising above the head of Loch Sligachan, this rounded Marilyn offers a quieter perspective on Skye than its jagged neighbours. Its grassy, often boggy slopes provide a straightforward ascent, rewarding walkers with a superb view of Glamaig’s steep scree and the distant Trotternish Ridge stretching northwards across the island’s rugged interior.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, likely meaning 'Hill of the Grey Ridge' or 'Hill of the Grey Bank', derived from bac (a ridge or hollow) and glas (grey or green-grey), reflecting the muted tones of its moorland slopes.
  • Situated between the Red Hills and the Trotternish peninsula, the summit provides an exceptional vantage point of the Cuillin range's northern face without the technical difficulties of their rocky crests.
  • Looking east across the Sound of Raasay, the distinctive flat-topped silhouette of Dùn Caan on the Isle of Raasay is clearly visible from the summit cairn.
  • It is frequently climbed in tandem with its slightly higher neighbour to the north, Ben Lee, to create a circular walk starting from the Braes road.
  • In a landscape dominated by the world-famous peaks of the Cuillin, Beinn Bhac-ghlais remains peacefully anonymous, mostly visited by Marilyn-baggers or those seeking a sanctuary from the crowds at the Old Man of Storr.
