About An Riabhachan West Top

Situated on the high, sinuous ridge of its parent Munro, this rocky shoulder offers a profound sense of isolation. It stands deep in the wild interior between Loch Monar and Loch Mullardoch, requiring a long, committed approach into some of the most remote mountain terrain the North West Highlands has to offer.

Did You Know?

  • Its name is derived from the Gaelic 'An Riabhachan', meaning 'The Brindled One', referring to the speckled, greyish appearance of the rock and scree that defines these high ridges.
  • This summit is a primary feature of the 'Mullardoch Round', a demanding expedition that takes walkers over a series of high peaks far from the nearest public road at the end of Glen Cannich.
  • The view south from the top is dominated by the massive bulk of the Affric hills, with the sharp, distinctive pyramid of Sgùrr nan Lapaich standing out across the deep waters of Loch Mullardoch.
  • At over 1,000 metres, it is significantly higher than many primary Munros, yet its status as a Munro Top means it is frequently overlooked by those following the main ridge path.
  • Reaching this point usually involves such a long walk-in that by the time you arrive, you have long since stopped worrying about your car's MOT and started worrying about whether you actually remember how to drive.
