Did You Know?

  • The fell sits at the heart of the Kidland Forest, a massive commercial plantation that has transformed the landscape from open monastic sheep walks into a dense, green puzzle. The River Alwin rises nearby, beginning its steep 2.7-mile dash down to meet the River Coquet.
  • The suffix 'Law' is a linguistic relic from the Old English 'hlāw', denoting a prominent hill or burial mound. In this part of the Cheviots, these hills served as vital landmarks for Border Reivers navigating the lawless 'Middle Marches' during the 16th century.
  • Historically, this area was part of a vast estate granted to the monks of Newminster Abbey in the 12th century. They managed the land for wool production, likely finding the brutal winter winds at 540 meters an excellent test of their monastic fortitude.
  • The summit offers a commanding view of the Usway Burn valley, one of the most secluded spots in the Northumberland National Park. It is one of the few places in England where you are more likely to be judged by a feral goat than encountered by another human being.
  • Despite the name containing the word 'path,' finding a consistent one on the ground is a test of faith rather than navigation. You will frequently find yourself following a promising trail only to realize it was designed by a sheep with a very eccentric sense of direction.
