Did You Know?

  • Alfred Wainwright included this unnamed 1,279ft top as part of a circular walk in his book, The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. He praised the area for its 'exploratory' feel, where the reward is found in navigating the intricate maze of rocky outcrops and boggy depressions between the main summits.
  • The hill overlooks Gurnal Dubs to the south, a picturesque tarn featuring a small stone boathouse. Originally a natural collection of small pools, it was dammed in the 19th century to provide a steady water supply for the James Cropper paper mills in Burneside.
  • The summit offers a clear, earned view south-east across the Kent Valley toward Kendal and the limestone scarp of Scout Scar, while the eastern horizon is dominated by the smooth, whale-backed profiles of the Howgill Fells.
  • While the higher Brunt Knott claims the title of Potter Fell's highest point, this particular summit is classified as a 'Synge' — a hill named after writer Tim Synge, who meticulously catalogued every Lakeland summit with at least 15 metres of prominence.
  • Being officially recorded as 'nameless' is a rare distinction in the Lake District; it essentially guarantees that you won't have to share the summit with anyone who hasn't spent at least ten minutes double-checking their map.
