About Tarn Crags Top [Bowscale Fell East Top]

Rising above the steep, eastern amphitheatre of Bowscale Tarn, this grassy plateau offers a quieter perspective on the Northern Fells. A secondary summit of Bowscale Fell, its gentle slopes belie the dramatic plunge of the crags below. It provides an excellent link for those traversing from Mungrisdale toward the higher Skiddaw massifs.

Geology
The ground beneath you is part of the Kirk Stile Formation, consisting of fine-grained rocks created from compressed layers of ancient mud and silt.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a literal description derived from the Old Norse 'tjorn', meaning a small mountain lake, referring to the dark waters of Bowscale Tarn sitting directly beneath the crags.
  • Included as a distinct summit by both Birkett and Synge, it is frequently visited by walkers following the historic pony track that climbs steadily from the village of Mungrisdale.
  • The summit provides one of the best angles to view the steep, scree-covered eastern face of Carrock Fell, located just across the valley of the River Caldew.
  • If you find yourself here in a thick mist, the distinction between the gentle summit plateau and the 'crags' becomes vital; one is a pleasant walk, while the other is a very sudden shortcut to the tarn.
