About Scout Scar (Wainwright summit)

Rising just west of Kendal, this impressive limestone escarpment offers one of the best effort-to-reward ratios in the Lakes. The broad, grassy plateau leads to a dramatic cliff edge, providing a grandstand view across the Lyth Valley toward the high fells of Coniston and the Langdale Pikes.

Did You Know?

  • The name is rooted in Old Norse, with 'Scout' deriving from skúti, meaning a protruding crag or overhanging rock, and 'Scar' from skör, meaning a precipitous rock face. Together, they perfectly describe the dramatic western edge of the plateau.
  • Alfred Wainwright included this summit in his 'Outlying Fells of Lakeland' guide, describing the sudden revelation of the Lakeland peaks from the escarpment edge as 'a scene of great beauty'.
  • A distinctive circular stone shelter known as 'The Mushroom' sits on the ridge. Built in 1912 to mark the coronation of King George V, its interior features a toposcope that helps walkers identify distant landmarks like Scafell Pike and Great Gable.
  • The scar provides a perfect vantage point for the Lyth Valley below, famous for its damson orchards. Beyond the valley, the skyline is dominated by the Coniston Fells, the Langdale Pikes, and the massive bulk of Helvellyn.
  • The underlying carboniferous limestone creates a specific habitat for rare flora; keep an eye out for the small, dark Northern Brown Argus butterfly, which relies on the common rock-rose that grows in the thin, alkaline soil here.
  • For a hill that barely brushes 230 metres, it possesses a remarkable ability to generate a wind strong enough to relocate your lunch to the next county.
