About Bell Hill

Rising above the Harthope Valley near Langleeford, this rounded shoulder of the Cheviots offers a quiet, grassy ascent. While often bypassed for the higher bulk of The Cheviot, it provides an excellent vantage point over the Harthope Burn towards the jagged tors of Hedgehope Hill and the steep slopes of Long Crags.

Did You Know?

  • The name likely derives from the Old English 'belle', used to describe a hill with a distinctive, rounded shape. This is a common toponym across the Cheviots and the Borders for secondary summits that stand out from the main ridgeline.
  • Hikers frequently encounter Bell Hill when approaching the higher summits from the road-end at Langleeford. It serves as a secondary objective for those walking the valley floor who want a manageable climb without committing to the full, often boggy, plateau of the main massif.
  • The summit offers a clear, unobstructed perspective of the Harthope Valley. To the south, the dramatic granite outcrops of Hedgehope Hill are prominent, while to the west, the massive northern slope of Scald Hill dominates the immediate skyline.
  • As a Tump (a hill with at least thirty metres of prominence), it is one of hundreds in the Northumberland National Park, often overlooked by walkers focused on the 2,000ft peaks but cherished by those seeking solitude away from the Pennine Way.
  • It is the quintessential 'waiting room' hill; many walkers find themselves standing here, staring up at the clouds obscuring The Cheviot and deciding whether to carry on into the mist or simply enjoy the much better view from right where they are.
